Policy sources checked: October 3, 2026. Airline rules can change; confirm the conditions attached to your ticket before accepting a change.

You may be able to change a Lufthansa flight on the day of departure, depending on your fare and available flights. For eligible European Economy Flex and Business Flex tickets, Lufthansa offers a free move to an earlier flight under specific conditions. Other changes follow your ticket's rebooking rules and may involve a change fee, a fare difference, or both.

The first thing to check is your fare name. An earlier flight appearing in a search does not, by itself, mean your ticket can be moved to it for free.

Can You Take an Earlier Lufthansa Flight for Free?

Lufthansa's Europe fares guidance allows eligible Economy Flex and Business Flex passengers to move to an earlier flight on the same day, subject to seat availability in their booked travel class. The original booking class does not need to be available.

The benefit applies to direct flights, with the route and airline unchanged. Request it during check-in on departure day through the airline's website or app, a check-in machine, or an airport check-in counter. See the conditions in Lufthansa Group's European fare overview.

For example, if you want to replace an afternoon departure with a morning flight, look for the earlier-flight option during check-in. Keep your original plans until the replacement flight is confirmed. Check the baggage and special-service restrictions below before relying on this benefit.

How Much Does a Lufthansa Same-Day Change Cost?

There is no single charge that applies to every Lufthansa ticket. The published European fare structure lists the following regular rebooking fees:

European fares only; not a universal same-day price list
European farePublished rebooking rule
Economy BasicNot rebookable
Economy Light€100 rebooking fee
Economy Comfort€80 rebooking fee
Economy Comfort Green€80 rebooking fee
Economy FlexNo rebooking fee
Business Comfort / Comfort GreenNot rebookable
Business Flex / Flex GreenNo rebooking fee

These are European fare rules, not charges for all Lufthansa routes. A fare surcharge may still apply to regular rebooking into a higher booking class. Confirm the total shown for your ticket before accepting a change.

Why Older Lufthansa Change Guides May Be Wrong

Lufthansa Group introduced a revised European fare structure for tickets issued from April 28, 2026, according to its official fare-change announcement.

Economy Classic became Economy Comfort, and Economy Light became rebookable for a fee. Business fare names and flexibility also changed. If an older article says all European Economy Light tickets cannot be changed, that advice may no longer match a newly issued ticket.

Check the conditions attached to your booking, especially if your ticket was issued before the change.

How to Change Your Lufthansa Flight

For regular rebooking, follow Lufthansa's official change-flight instructions:

  1. Open Manage my booking from Lufthansa's change-flight page.
  2. Enter your booking reference and surname, or sign in with your Travel ID.
  3. Choose the flight and passengers you want to change.
  4. Review the available departures and total charges.
  5. Confirm the change and check the new e-ticket sent by email.

Some bookings require Service Centre assistance. Lufthansa says most travel-agency bookings can be changed online, but your agency or Lufthansa may need to help if the online process is unavailable.

For the eligible free earlier-flight benefit, start with departure-day check-in rather than assuming a regular rebooking quote will show the same option.

Can You Change Your Flight After Checking In?

Yes, if your ticket permits the change. Lufthansa's regular rebooking guidance says you must first cancel your online check-in. This can usually be done through Manage my booking; contact its Service Centre if you cannot complete it online.

The airline says rebooking is available until departure, with deadlines varying by departure airport. Allow enough time to resolve the booking and complete airport formalities.

What If You Have Checked Baggage?

Check this before dropping off your bag. Lufthansa Group's earlier-flight guidance says no checked baggage may have been dropped off and no special assistance requested for the original flight. Lufthansa's consumer page uses stricter wording about baggage or special services being booked.

Because those published descriptions differ, ask Lufthansa to confirm eligibility if your booking includes either. Do not assume an unused baggage allowance automatically makes you eligible.

Do These Rules Apply to Long-Haul Connections?

Do not automatically apply the European earlier-flight benefit to a long-haul itinerary. Lufthansa explains in its Europe fares FAQ that these fares do not apply to European connecting flights included in an intercontinental through fare.

A New York–Frankfurt–Stockholm booking, for example, needs to be checked under the conditions of that through ticket.

What If Lufthansa Cancels Your Flight?

An airline cancellation follows a different process from a voluntary change. For a short-notice cancellation, Lufthansa says you can check its Help Center to see whether you have already been rebooked or select an alternative flight and rebook free of charge.

Start with Lufthansa's official flight-disruption guidance before paying to change the disrupted booking yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I move to a later Lufthansa flight for free?

The European benefit described here specifically covers an earlier flight. For a later departure, check your regular fare conditions and the price offered for your booking.

Is the free earlier flight guaranteed?

No. It depends on seat availability and meeting the applicable conditions.

Can I change my seat after rebooking?

Review your seat reservation after the change. Lufthansa says seats and additional services cannot always be transferred, and you may need to select them again. Check its additional-services guidance.
