A name error on an American Airlines ticket should be assessed as a correction for the existing passenger. Do not cancel or reissue the reservation yourself until the ticket issuer confirms the process.

What American’s guidance covers

American’s official name-correction instructions distinguish minor and major corrections for qualifying wholly unused tickets validated on 001 ticket stock. The flights and carriers in the itinerary affect which process applies. Correcting identity information is not permission to transfer the ticket to somebody else.

The guidance says corrections cannot be made within 24 hours of departure because the flight may be under airport control. Act early. This departure restriction is different from any cancellation protection after buying a ticket.
